Attention Required - League Meet
Please take a moment to check your swimmer's status, and, if applicable, events for the appropriate session(s) of the CVSL Championship Meet, aka "Leagues."
What are you looking for?
- Check to see that your swimmer's attendance status is correct (e.g. "not attending" if not swimming in the respective session; "attending" if they are)
- Check to see that your swimmer is entered in the individual events they were expecting.
- Coaches have been hard at work reaching out and verifying this information with swimmers. So it's likely that you're all set. If there are issues we notice when submitting tomorrow, we will try to reach out.
What do you do with this information?
- If everything is 100%, take a gander at the remaining sections of this email, and then have a great weekend.
- If something is amiss you can...
- Make the adjustment yourself if you feel comfortable and confident in the change.
- Reach out to us, identifying the discrepancy and either your preferred solution or how you'd like us to help. The latter might be obvious
- Take a gander at the remaining sections of this email, and then have a great weekend.
How many events can my swimmer swim anyway?
- They may be entered in a maximum of 5 events, as long as one of those is a relay. Possible max entry combinations...
- 4 individual events (IE) + 1 relay event (RE) or 3 IE + 2 RE
- Relay entries are selected by the coaches in an effort to create as many of the fastest relays as possible. For our final 2 championship meets, relays score out to 12 places rather than the typical 1, and are worth roughly double the points compared to individual events. Side note: individual events score out to 12 places (leagues) and 18 places (states).
- Just because swimmers can be entered into 5 events doesn't mean they will be. We will not be able to put every swimmer into a relay, and we are limited to a total of 450 entry points as a team. We typically bring 100 swimmers to our dual meets. 5 events per swimmer puts us 50pts over. While this may not end up being a factor, it's important you are aware.
Can your swimmer sign up for the maximum number of events at each session?
- No! While it looks in SwimTopia like 3 meets, it is only 1 meet. Therefore entry limits apply to all 3 sessions collectively...no more than 4 individuals total, no more than 2 relays total, and no more than 5 total entries IE + RE.
- Friday evening is distance events. These are mostly geared toward 11 and older swimmers; however the 100IM is offered during this session for 10 and younger swimmers.
- Saturday morning is 10 and under swimmers only. Normal 25 yard events, medley & free relays, and 50 free.
- Saturday afternoon is 11 and over swimmers only. Normal 50 yard events, plus medley & free relays.
When is it too late to make changes?
- Tomorrow. The later into the day, the less likely a change can be made. Our team's entries must be submitted by 2400 Saturday...and I'm for sure not waiting until then to submit.
- We have a very limited number of exhibition entries (10) we can use if needed. So if your swimmer was expecting to miss the meet, but can suddenly attend, we might be able to get you in as exhibition. No points, no relays, but times are official.
What if your swimmer suddenly cannot attend?
- While we really really hope this doesn't happen, things happen. Always let us know so we can at least attempt to adjust relay assignments if possible.
Will parents be assigned jobs for the League Meet?
- Yes, but not the normal ones. Because we are meet hosts, we will have self-assigned jobs focused more on the facility. Deck Marshall, for instance, is one. Look for those early next week.
Thank you for your patience at last night's meet. While we all love a speedy meet, we had some work that needed to be done in order to be prepared to host Leagues. Beginning last season, the CVSL switched to using SwimTopia and the accompanying Meet Maestro as the meet software. This eliminated the need for cards and enabled a greater level of access to parents and swimmers via the website. Part of this decision was driven by the fact that we came out of COVID with nobody to run our meets. In fact, last we knew, there were only 2 such people (Administrative Officials) in the entire state. 1 runs the UVAC meets, among others, and the other was not and would not likely be available. SwimTopia created the opportunity for individual teams to serve in the role of AO. Therefore, last season, Jacsen Callanan of Winooski and the crew at Vergennes, assisted by 4 awesome Shark parents (in no particular order... Jamie Pinkham, Ben Ebert, Andrea Grant, Amanda Headley) made it happen. Now it's our turn to take the lead, and becoming adept at using the Dolfin timing system is a required component of that. Last night was our second attempt, but first at having times sent from the watches to the Dolfin program, before being loaded into Meet Maestro. Our amazing officials haven't done this often, our quartet of scorers hadn't been able to do much previously other than observe, and our team has never done this. And they did great!!! There were moments of seamless timing, transferring, and uploading, and there were moments of fantastic troubleshooting. So while a meet against a 20 member team (they actually have a LOT more than that) would usually end before 9pm, we needed to go through this so the League meet doesn't end at 9pm!!
Also thank you to those who stepped in to help out for Middlebury when light on volunteers. I'd call you all out as well, but I didn't get to always see exactly who stepped in. Thank you!
Should throw a couple more thank you's out while I'm at it. Thank you to Caroline Veal who stepped in a couple of meets ago to help with parent volunteers. If you need anything related to volunteering, see her! There are more thank you's to be given out for sure, but I'll conclude this email by thanking our officials. They volunteer almost every meet (along with the aforementioned), for the whole meet, and they're always quick to offer suggestions and feedback, to both swimmers and coaches, in an effort to help our kids improve. My only complaint about officials...I'd like more!
Look for more info regarding our makeup BCC meet (Tue 7/25) and the VSA Championship Meet (States) coming next week.
